Facts of the Pattern

Construction: This cowl is knit in the round to create a tube. This tube will be seamed together at the ends to create a double-thick cowl of the recommended length or your preferred length. Tips are provided for making a “seamless” cowl.

Materials:

  • US 8 / 5 mm : I used 16” / 40.5 cm circular needles. The tube will be about 18.75” /48 cm so choose needles accordingly.

  • Tapestry Needle (for weaving in ends)

  • 4 Markers (or waste yarn) : One marker should be different than the other 3 to show your beginning of the round.

Gauge:

Measured in a 6.25” x 4” / 16 cm x 10 cm area, knit in the round, and laid flat to block.

  • 30 stitches and 24 rows in Chart A

Skills in this Pattern:

  • Long Tail Cast On or Preferred Cast On

  • Knit stitch in the round

  • Right-leaning increase (Make 1 Right)

  • Left-leaning increase (Make 1 Left)

  • Right-leaning decrease (knit 2 together)

  • Left-leaning decrease (slip, slip, knit)

  • Reading written texture instructions OR charted texture instructions

  • Knitted Bind Off or Preferred Bind off

  • Mattress Stitch

  • Optional: Provisional Cast On

  • Optional: Kitchener Stitch

Yarn:

About 275 (330, 375) yds / 252 (302, 343) m of DK weight yarn.

  • The sample used 100% Superwash Merino (Berry DK by Woolberry Fiber Co. in Seashore)

  • I recommend using a yarn that feels plush and cozy! I used a 3-ply yarn which has bounce and great stitch definition. My sample uses superwash wool which grows with washing/blocking. If you are using a yarn that does not grow as much (acrylic, non-superwash wool, etc), the result may be smaller. You can find more recommendations on adjusting the sizing to your needs below.

Sizing:

This pattern is written in one height (9.25” / 24 cm) and three written lengths 20” / 50 cm (24” / 60 cm, 28” / 70 cm). Tips for how to modify height and circumference are included in the pattern.
